Why Time Seemingly Speeds Up As We Grow Older?
Do you ever feel that time runs more rapidly the more years go by? It is very ordinary as a psychological experience and yields some interesting information about the relationship between human beings and time. When we were children, everything was novel for us to examine and remember, and it took the brain much work to process. The older a person grows, the more routine becomes the event of life with fewer occasions that are novel, and days, weeks, and even years become blurred together.

They name it the “proportional theory”: For example, scientists say that as time passes by, each passed year becomes smaller in comparison with our lifespan. A year is 10% of a 10-year-old’s life, but it’s just 2% for a 50-year-old. It’s a ratio that diminishes with years and thus with how fast one thinks time flows. This phenomenon makes us even more aware of the value of time. It reminds us to search for experiences and to be in touch with life. It helps us retrieve some of the enchantment that makes time go slower—something we may wish we could control if time stood still.
